The Charter granting City Status is dated 24 February 1964 and in 2014 the city celebrates 50 years of city status.
50 years of Southampton Exhibition
Celebrate the 50 years of Southampton by sharing your memory with us!
This year Southampton celebrates 50 years of being a city, and as a local people, we want you to get involved. As we all know a pictures tells a thousand words, also each one of us have number of stories of the city, we live in, share with us and it may appear at a month long photographic exhibition in the centre of Southampton!.
We want to see how you see Southampton, the city from your perspective, memories that you have from the last 50 years. There have been many iconic moments for the city; we want to see them all. Whether it's a moment showcasing a part of Olympic Torch Relay in 2012, 150th anniversaty of Southampton Football Club, the famous 3 Queens in Southampton's water, graduating from a university, watching a game at The Dell or maybe, you have a photo of what Southampton previously looked like and how it has grown. Whatever it is, as long as its related to the City, we want to see them.

Send us your photos to be judged by an independant panel, and be in with a chance to have them shown to the public!

24 February: Mayoral Open House - Civic Centre
A visit to the Mayoral Rooms 10am - 12noon
24 February: City of Southampton 50th Anniversary Commemorative Service - St Mary's Church
A commemorative service at 5pm.
23 March: Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile - Guildhall Square
The Southampton Mile is a mass participation event for people to run 1, 3 or 6 miles in aid of Sport Relief
27 March: Embrace The Change - Southampton Solent University
Embrace the Change - changing the world for the better with two events that focused on solutions for a better future.
11 - 22 April: 50 Good Eggs - Egg Hunt in various locations
Etch invited 50 local businesses to decorate and hide eggs around the city, they then shared a photo of the location on Instagram and Twitter. Whoever found them, they in turn shared a photo finding the egg and were entered into a prize-draw.
17 – 27 April: Easter Fair - Southampton Common
Traditional fair with popular market on Bank Holiday Monday.
23 April: St George's Day Festival - The Hub Theatre
Celebration of the city's community organisations
30 April – 5 May: Moscow State Circus - Mayflower Park
The greatest and most famous circus visits Mayflower Park
29 May: 50,000 Miles on stationary bike finish - Red Funnel, terminal 1 building.
On the 29 May Gus McKechnie reached the end of cycling 50,000 miles on the Red Funnel Ferries.
June - August: Community Fairs - Various venues
June: Southampton Airport "Welcome to Southampton" Wall - Arrivals area
As part of 50th anniversary of the city, Southampton Airport have commissioned a Southampton Solent University final year photography student to gather images from across the city of people as well as landmarks. These will be mounted and displayed on a wall in the arrivals area of the airport as a 'welcome to Southampton'.
4 June: Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay
The Queen’s Baton Relay visited the city during its two week journey across England, drumming up support for Team England and celebrating sport as it goes.
7 June: Holi One Southampton - Mayflower Park
Thousands of people cam to Mayflower Park dressed in white to share music, dance, performance art and visual stimulation.
22 June: Vintage Family Festival - Bedford Place
Celebrating the city’s 50th anniversary with the Hampshire Farmers Market, Vintage vehicles, music and street party
6 - 30 June: 50@50 - Various Venues
Southampton Music Hub celebrates with 50 musical events. Some of these will be open to the public.
29 June Southampton Sky Ride - city wide route
Mass participation cycling event in the city centre attracting 12,000 participants.
12 July: Let’s Rock Southampton - Southampton Common
80’s Music Festival featuring Billy Ocean, Bananarama, Howard Jones, ABC, Go West, Nick Heyward, The Real Thing, Heaven 17, Then Jerico, Jaki Graham, Altered Images, Brother Beyond.
12 July: Mela Festival - Hoglands Park
Annual free festival focussing on south east Asian culture attracting 25,000 visitors.
12 July: Golden Anniversary Concert - Turner Sims Concert Hall
The Southampton Concert Orchestra celebrates its Golden Anniversary
12 July: A Song For Southampton - Oasis Academy, Mayfield
A celebration of our city from past to present with songs and dance performances
25 July: Southampton Play Day - Hoglands Park
Fun and activities celebrating a child's right to play
27 July: Big Fun Run - Southampton Common
5k Fun Run for all the family to raise funds for a charity of your own choice.
2 August: Eid Festival - The Ropewalk Centre
Celebrating the end of a month-long religious Festival with activities for all the family.
1 – 17 August: Art at The Heart Festival - Nuffield Playing Field @ Guildhall Square
A summer festival of events at Nuffield Playing Field, Guildhall Square, in partnership with Art Asia, City Eye, John Hansard Gallery, Mayflower Theatre and Turner Sims.
22 - 23 August: Southampton Maritime Festival
Two day maritime event for all the family at Southampton Docks
21 – 25 August: August Bank Holiday Fair - Southampton Common
Traditional fair with popular market on Bank Holiday Monday.
4 & 5 October: Music in the City - Various Venues in the City Centre
Music in Unusual places returns and the free event attracts thousands of visitors over the weekend.
11 October: Team Solent Sharks - St Mary's Leisure Centre
Watch the most popular and toughest Paralympic sports there is - wheelchair rugby.
9 November: Remembrance Service - Cenotaph
