📰 City celebrates biggest running event on record

Tens of thousands of people lined the streets of Southampton on Sunday (April 23) as the city hosted the biggest running event in its history.

The ABP Southampton Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K saw just under 10,000 runners pound the pavements and up to a further 30,000 flock to the city to spectate. It is the first time in more than 30 years that the city has hosted a full marathon.

Organiser Chris Rees said: "The response to the entire event has been fantastic. The addition of the full marathon distance was such a success that we're already working towards it returning in 2018.”

At the ABP Southampton Marathon’s peak, some 430 people were crossing the finish line in Guildhall Square every 60 seconds.

It’s estimated that more than £1m was spent in the city over the weekend, with runners and their supporters spending cash on hotel rooms, meals, coffees and other items during their visit.

Charities have also benefitted from the event, with local and national worthy causes set to receive a windfall of half a million pounds following this year’s ABP Southampton Marathon, Half Marathon and 10k.

An army of community-spirited volunteers helped to make the event a success. More than 850 gave up their time for this year’s ABP Southampton Marathon. Named ‘ABP Milemakers’ the army of helpers will do everything from handing out water to singing to keep runners motivated.

Chris Rees said: "Putting on such a huge event takes months of meticulous planning and organisation but bringing the city together like this is what makes it so rewarding. To see so many thousands of people cross the finish line, many of them for the first time, fills us with pride."
