Southampton is en Vogue for Recycling Week16th June 2015
Upcycled fashion will be the statement wardrobe essential during this year’s national Recycling Week (22-28 June 2015) campaign in Southampton.
Southampton City Council is hosting an Upcycled Fashion Show, showcasing how clothes can be reused and recycled to create new and innovative fashion statements. The show will include garments that have been revamped or created from recycled fabric, to create new and unique outfits.
Councillor Jacqui Rayment, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "This show promises to be a lot of fun, with some very interesting ideas and creations on display. But, with over a million tonnes of textiles being thrown away in the UK each year, there's also a very real market and opportunity to reduce landfill and create something truly unique. Alternatively, 'old' or unwanted clothing can be recycled at local textile banks or taken to charity shops. The fashion show will help show that old clothes can be given a new lease of life."
The outfits were designed and created during a series of community sewing workshops during May, hosted by Transition Southampton. Local residents will also be modelling their own designs.
This inspiring show takes place on Wednesday 24 June at 7pm at the Civic Centre. Tickets are £5 per person and must be purchased in advance; they include refreshments. All profits will be donated to charity. Recycled jewellery and other upcycled products will also be available to purchase.
Tickets are available by telephoning 023 8083 4100 or can be purchased at the council’s City Depot and Recycling Park office reception; First Avenue, Southampton, SO15 0LJ.
