📰 First sponsor revealed for Marwell’s Zany Zebras sculpture project

Marwell Wildlife is thrilled to announce that Southampton City Council is set to sponsor the first sculpture for Marwell’s Zany Zebras.

Following the success of the Go! Rhinos sculpture project in 2013, Southampton City Council has agreed to start off the stampede of zebras coming to the city centre for summer 2016.

Councillor Satvir Kaur, Cabinet Member for Communities at Southampton City Council, said: “We were delighted with the public’s response to the Go! Rhinos trail in 2013.  Residents and visitors to the city loved these colourful and creative additions to our public spaces, with tens of thousands of people having their photo taken next to one of these fabulous pieces of art.

“We’re really excited to be working with Marwell on next year’s trail, as it will once again provide an opportunity to showcase Southampton and take people to places which they wouldn’t ordinarily visit.”
Businesses are being invited to take part in this exclusive event, with a chance to sponsor a large zebra which will go on display in the city. In addition, a miniature replica will be on display in Marwell Zoo.

The zebras will be painted in a range of different colourful designs by local artists. Once painting is complete, the zebras will form a trail across Southampton for 10 weeks. The sculptures will then be auctioned to raise funds for Marwell’s conservation work with endangered Grevy’s zebras and other wildlife, and to support communities living in the arid rangelands of northern Kenya.

Kirstie Mathieson, Project Manager of Marwell’s Zany Zebras said: ‘Go! Rhinos brought over 250,000 visitors into the city centre to walk the trail and we hope that Marwell’s Zany Zebras will attract considerably higher numbers next summer. The more sponsors we have on board, the more sculptures there will be and the greater the impact the trail will have on the local economy. We are thrilled that Southampton City Council have recognised the impact that this project will have on city and we are delighted to have them on board as our first sculpture sponsor.’
