Keep Britain Tidy has announced a record-breaking number of award-winning parks and green spaces for 2014.
St James’ Park, Weston Shore, Mansel Park and Mayfield Park in Southampton are officially some of the very best in the UK. These parks and open spaces are among a record-breaking 1,476 parks and green spaces that have received the prestigious Green Flag Award.
The award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.
Councillor Jacqui Rayment, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport said “We’re really proud of our parks and green spaces in Southampton and naturally I’m absolutely delighted that they have been recognised with Green Flag awards.
Wherever you live in Southampton you will not be far from your local green space. The awards recognise that Southampton residents are benefitting from green spaces of the very highest quality. Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities.
A huge amount of work from both the council and voluntary groups is required in keeping these parks and open spaces in such fantastic condition and these awards are a testament to their collective hard work and dedication. My congratulations and thanks to all those involved.”
Adam Manning of the Friends of Weston Shore volunteer group said “It's great news that Weston Shore in Southampton has been awarded the Green Flag again. It's a wonderfully rich habitat for so many types of plants and animals as well as being a beautiful place for people to visit and enjoy.”
