THEY captured the imagination of everyone in Southampton during the summer – and last night at a glittering auction, the Go! Rhino Sculptures tugged at the heart strings helping to raise £124,700 for good causes.

Thirty-seven eye-catching artworks went under the hammer and there was stiff competition to snap up one of the iconic beasts.

Estimates of £2,000 per rhino quickly went by the wayside as the Marwell Wildlife public art exhibition came to a tantalising close.

The most expensive Rhino was Flossy – dressed as a dental nurse – and she made £9,000.

Status Quo bassist John 'Rhino' Edwards was among the 200-strong audience and he paid £4,000 for Enrhinomental.

Auctioneer Mike Osman ensured there was plenty fun to help the bids roll in – joking with the audience that successful bidders would have to put the roof down on their cars to get the colourful creatures home.

Money raised will be divided between Marwell conservation projects, Wessex Heartbeat High 5 Appeal and the Rose Road Association.
