Virtual Viewer
by DJ Willrich

Beaulieu-based company DJ Willrich Ltd is an Audio Visual and Multimedia Systems Integrator that works with various industries across the world, including theme parks, museums and exhibition centres.
DJW recently created the Virtual Viewer for the Jamestowne Archaearium in Virginia. When looking through the viewer it provides a live view of the fort site as it is today. However, it also presents the view as it would have been in 1607, in scale and in perspective, superimposed onto the live view.
Visitors are able to explore the fort using the viewer - as they move it around they discover buildings or structures of significant interest. On selection, it is shown in context with the rest of the fort with a commentary. Marrying the 3D model with live views of the landscape was the biggest challenge.
To achieve this DJW developed a software that uses a rotary encoder to determine the exact angle that the viewer is pointing. The software then calculates the correct angle at which to composite the 3D models.
