Solar Powered Roundabout

The roundabout at Southampton Airport is 100% solar powered and uses Light Emitting Diodes to maintain its street lighting.
The idea was suggested by the Airport engineers, who had been considering more environmentally friendly solutions to the traditional use of electricity and it now benefits road users and pedestrians alike.
Over the last three years, the solar powered roundabout has saved the Southampton atmosphere a huge 37 tons of CO2. Stewart Smith, Environment and Surfaces Manager said: “We are continually looking for environmentally aware innovations that can make a difference.
Our solar powered roundabout is just one example, and we are currently trialing other lighting solutions designed to reduce energy consumption and manage emissions”.
