Southampton smokers are being encouraged to take part in Stoptober, the 28-day stop smoking challenge from Public Health England, which begins on 1 October 2018.
Southampton City Council is supporting Stoptober through a local advertising campaign featured on local bus fleets, BT Inlinks digital screens and online, that directs smokers to local quitting services and helpful online tools via Public Health England.
Despite moves in the right direction and recent news that smoking prevalence is at its lowest level ever, an estimated 1 in 5 people in Southampton still smoke, which is much higher than the England average, where an estimated 6 million people smoke.
Quitting smoking is much easier with the right support. The most successful quit attempts are made with a combination of quit methods, so this year Stoptober is providing a free online Personal Quit Plan, which helps smokers find the right support for them – including face-to-face support, nicotine replacement therapies (such as patches, inhalers or lozenges) and e-cigarettes (vaping). The best way to quit smoking in Southampton is through targeted support. Groups, one-to-one and telephone support are available, and you can contact Southampton Healthy Living either through their website or by calling 0300 123 3791 for information. They offer friendly, free local support for anyone wanting to stop smoking:

Wendy Lee, Programme Manager for Southampton Healthy Living said: "You are four times more likely to quit with support from our experts than you are if you go it alone. If you quit on 1 October you could save £135 by the end of the month" *
To date, Stoptober has driven 1.7 million quit attempts and quitting success rates are at an all-time high. Stoptober also offers a range of extra free quitting support including a Stoptober app, Facebook messenger bot, daily emails and Stoptober online communities.
