This is a chance for children to design a new flag for Southampton.

Councillor Simon Letts, the Leader of Southampton City Council, has launched an official flag design competition for school children in the city. The competition is to creatively design a community flag which can be used to represent the city’s heritage and unique character, to people visiting the city and to advertise the city around the world.

This new flag will not replace the city’s civic flag, which is flown from public buildings, but will be used at community events and for advertising purposes. The flag will be added to the Flag Institute’s UK Flag Registry and become a recognisable symbol of the city of Southampton. It will be freely available to businesses, residents and souvenir manufacturers to use and show their pride in Southampton.

Children living in Southampton are being asked to take inspiration from Southampton’s history and character. Instructions and a design template have been sent out to all schools and the closing date for entering a design is the 19 July 2017. There are prizes to win for each of the following four age groups. A judging panel will choose an overall winner, who will have their design displayed across the city, for many years to come.

The age categories are:
• 5 - 7 years old
• 8 - 10 years old
• 11 - 12 years old
• 13 - 16 year olds

A judging panel will choose a winner from all four categories, plus an overall winner will have their design printed and displayed for all to see.

Councillor Simon Letts, said: “I believe a flag for Southampton will allow residents to express pride in our community, celebrate our heritage and culture and raise greater recognition and awareness nationwide. That’s why I’m launching a competition to create a people’s flag for Southampton.”
