Westquay Watermark open space - Dec 2014
To celebrate the beginning of works onsite for WestQuay Watermark, Hammerson in partnership with the Southern Daily Echo is searching for Southampton's local hero to become the first official WestQuay Watermark groundbreaker.
Do you know someone who has played a key part in Southampton’s thriving community? Perhaps they give their time back to the community, serve your morning coffee with a smile, or quite simply they’re a local person who deserves the recognition and opportunity to be involved in a major construction milestone of one of the city’s most important and exciting new developments.
The successful person will mark the first major milestone in the scheme’s construction by pushing the button on the piling rig that will officially start the build of the £80 million project, as well as being the guest of honour at the official WestQuay Watermark groundbreaking event, taking place onsite on March 17th 2015.
To nominate your hero please email with the name, age and contact details of the person that you think deserves to be the groundbreaker, as well as telling us why they deserve recognition. All nominations must be submitted by Friday 6th March. If your hero is selected to be the lucky groundbreaker, you will receive a £50 gift card to spend at WestQuay Shopping Centre as well as an invitation to the groundbreaking event. The local hero will also receive a WestQuay Shopping Centre £50 gift card. #SouthamptonHeroes
Guy Wells, Hammerson Development Manager, commented: “To commemorate the start of the construction phase of WestQuay Watermark we want to find someone from the local community to be part of what will be a great addition to Southampton's thriving city centre. We're looking forward to receiving the nominations."
Ian Murray, Daily Echo Editor, said “It is going to be a great development for Southampton and it's exciting that the developers are involving local people right from the beginning.”
WestQuay Watermark, which is set to become Southampton’s new leisure and dining hub, is also the centrepiece of Southampton City Council’s VIP ‘Heart of the City’ project, as identified within its City Centre Master Plan that promotes its vision for the city. It is scheduled to receive £7 million from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund to support the provision of public realm and a new vibrant plaza.
