New life breathed into Weston Lane area27th October 2014
Weston residents will soon see 70 new dwellings on the site of the former Weston Lane Shopping Parade; part of Southampton City Council’s Estate Regeneration programme. The 1.1 hectare, site will include 40 private houses, 30 affordable apartments, three new shops as well as a multi-purpose community facility. This concept was developed through consultation with local residents in 2011 and 2012.
The scheme will be a beacon for the council’s new approach to delivering high quality, affordable city living opportunities, while regenerating areas in need.
With the foundations of the development now reaching completion, council representatives, developers Bouygues Development, their partners Spectrum Housing Group, the Home and Communities Agency (HCA) and contractors Bouygues UK, met on 23 October to lay one of the bricks that will form the structure of the new homes and community facilities.
Councillor Warwick Payne, Cabinet Member for Housing and Sustainability, said: “With the foundations now laid, I'm excited to see this new development coming out of the ground. The area will not only have more appropriate facilities for its residents, but it will also look so much better, as well as providing more homes within the city, which is what the Estate Regeneration programme strives to do.”
The first phase of the project, which includes the new shops and affordable apartments above, is currently on site. This will be complete from summer 2015, while the whole project is expected to be complete by February 2016. Spectrum Housing Group will manage the affordable properties and will market the private sale properties.
Nicolas Guérin, Managing Director of Bouygues Development, said: “With community at the heart of our projects, we are excited to be developing this new scheme at Weston Lane which will create high-quality homes for local people along with exceptional new public facilities. This development will play an important role in the wider regeneration of the area and we look forward to bringing it to fruition, working with our valued partners at Southampton City Council and Spectrum Housing Group.”
Jitinder Takhar, Group Director of Development at Spectrum Housing Group said, ”This is a prestigious scheme and we are really pleased to be working with Southampton City Council, the HCA and Bouygues Development to provide much needed homes for local people and to also offer homes for sale on the open market. Spectrum has a strong commitment to the Southampton area where we already manage over 750 homes.“
