Summer in the Square
This summer, Southampton's Cultural Quarter - Guildhall Square – will host a series of free gigs, performances and activities for all the family.
Rhona Byrne’s Huddlehood in Guildhall Square.
A mobile geometric container on wheels that disassembles into an interactive environment, Huddlehood is a bright yellow space to inhabit, explore and wear communal clothing Huddlewear that physically joins you with others, examining your relationships with those around you. The installation’s elements, including wearable artworks and carpet boulder sculptures, live inside the geometric container that is wrapped in white noise or static, so there is always something to encounter in the Square, day or night.
Huddlehood: Open daily 10am - 6pm
Huddlehood in Southampton is supported by Culture Ireland.
David Batchelor: P-A-R-A-D-E
British artist and writer David Batchelor’s primary object is colour. His practice is underpinned by a sheer delight in the myriad of brilliant hues within the urban environment, combined with a critical concern with how we see and respond to colour in this advanced technological age.
For Summer in the Square, Batchelor has created P-A-R-A-D-E a series of vibrant lamppost banners named that will run the full length of Above Bar Street.
Markus Bergström: Guildhall Pavilion
Markus Bergström is a Swedish artist-designer who interrogates the built environment and the relationship between furniture and architecture.
In August, for Summer in the Square Bergström will unveil a newly commissioned pavilion with stage and seating for Guildhall Square. The pavilion will create a social space that will feature performances, music, theatre, and poetry, engaging the public in a wider discourse around the built environment, our relationship to design and social dynamics.
