Colourful Walkway – a public art competition for children of Southampton
In Spring 2019 a colourful walkway will be permanently installed on Above Bar Street, stretching from outside John Hansard Gallery and NST City across the road to Guildhall Square.
John Hansard Gallery, part of the University of Southampton, in partnership with Southampton City Council and GO! Southampton, are launching a ‘Colourful Walkway’ competition, inviting children of Southampton to help design the public artwork and leave a lasting impact on the city.
The walkway aims to bring a splash of colour and excitement to Southampton’s city centre and the cultural quarter, as well as providing a crossing zone for pedestrians in town.
The walkway itself will be designed entirely by children aged 4-11* who take part in the Colourful Walkway Competition.
The final design will be a combination of selected winning entries, and every child who enters the competition will receive a certificate of participation and a badge.
Application packs will be shared with Primary Schools across Southampton where children can complete them at home or at school.
The pack encourages young designers to take inspiration from what they might see every day around the city such as road markings, street signs, parks, and buildings, and suggests abstract artists who use bright bold colours and graphic shapes such as Henri Matisse, Lubaina Himid, and Camille Walala.
John Hansard Gallery will also be hosting free drop-in workshops on 15 and 22 December 2018, in the Active Space, for children and their families to create entries and use our colourful materials and resources to do so.
Visitors of all ages are welcome to join us for the workshop, however only Southampton children of the age stipulated may enter the competition.
If your school hasn't recieved applications and you are a Southampton resident aged 4-11 and would like to take part, find the application here.
The closing date for entries is Monday 14 January 2019. The grand unveiling of the ‘Colourful Walkway’ competition will take place in the Summer Term 2019.
*Due to popular demand, we have opened the age range limitations from 5-11, to also include 4 year olds.
