Councillor Les Harris to become 795th Mayor of Southampton17th May 2017
Councillor Les Harris will become Southampton’s 795th Mayor at the Mayor making ceremony this Wednesday 17 May.
Following a customary year as the 579th Sherriff of the city, Councillor Harris will take over the honorary robes and chain for a one year term as Mayor.
Alongside Councillor Harris will be his wife, Councillor Beryl Harris, who is also a local councillor for the Bassett ward.
One of the Mayor’s social responsibilities is to raise funds for their chosen charity or charities. This year Councillor Harris has chosen two good causes to support, the Children’s Emergency and Trauma Department at Southampton Children’s Hospital and the Southampton Sea Cadets. The Southampton Children's Hospital needs help to build a new Children's Emergency and Trauma Department which will replace the existing Children's Accident and Emergency.
The new department will enable them to create a safe and specialised place for children to receive the very best care and attention, allowing them to continue saving lives in the highest quality environment.
The current Mayor, Councillor Cathie McEwing, has raised over £10,000 during her year as Mayor, which has been shared between her three chosen charities. She will continue to be a Councillor for the Redbridge ward once she steps down from her Mayoral duties.
Following the Mayor making ceremony there will be a photo shoot opportunity in Guildhall square with the Mayor and a Children’s Emergency and Trauma Department charity bus.
Councillor Harris said: “Becoming the Mayor of Southampton is a prestigious distinction that I’m hugely proud of. The formal duties and social commitments will be challenging, but it’s something I’m really looking forward to taking on.
“The next year will be hugely rewarding, the opportunity to represent the city will be a great honour.”
