Another successful Community Asset Transfer15th February 2017
A local community based charity has successfully taken over the running of Red Lodge Community Pool in Bassett as part of Southampton City Council’s ongoing Community Asset Transfer (CAT) programme. The scheme has enjoyed continued success with the handover of this valuable public asset to Red Lodge Community Pool Ltd, who recently took over managing the venue.
The swimming pool is one of eleven community assets that are being transferred from the Local Authority to local charities, faith, volunteer or community based organisations to run. Red Lodge Community Pool Ltd, who describe themselves as a ‘Charity run by the community, for the community’, acquired the facility at less than the market rate, in line with the CAT strategy ethos. Reassigning the community centres and the swimming pool at the most competitive rates possible gives recognition to the benefits the organisation running the asset give to the local community.
The pool provides a range of activities catering for the diverse population it serves, from swimming lessons for both children and adults, disability swimming sessions, fitness classes, parent and toddler groups and an Asian Women’s Group. The pool is also a registered centre for the training and qualification of candidates for the Royal Lifesaving Society 'National Pool Lifeguard Qualification' and Survive and Save awards under the umbrella of the Royal Lifesaving Society.
Councillor Satvir Kaur, Southampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Leisure, said: “I am really pleased to hear of another successful asset transfer so soon after Townhill Park Community Centre.
“Red Lodge Community Pool Ltd has been successfully running the pool for 15 years which put them in a strong position to apply for the freehold under our asset transfer programme.
“This is another example of a dedicated group of volunteers working hard to secure the future of a much loved community facility”.
Denice Wray, one of the Directors of Red Lodge Community Pool Ltd said: “Red Lodge is run by the community for the community. Our ambition is to continue to provide a valuable swimming facility for the benefit of the wider community and especially for the tuition of children and the needs of a range of people including people with disabilities”.
