📰 New record set at Southampton Airport Runway Run

More than 400 runners took to Southampton Airport’s runway at sunrise on Sunday 26th June for the 5K Runway Run to raise money for charity.

The fastest runner set a new Southampton Airport Runway record. This was Matt King from Winchester, who completed the 5k in 16:32.  The first female runner was Karen Andrews from Hedge End, who completed the race in 18:49. The first youth male was 13 year old Isaac Andrews from Burley who has just completed his 130th Park Run. The first female youth was Mia Nash from Eastleigh. The Best Fancy Dress prize went to the “Southampton Airport Cavemen”.

The first ever “overseas” runner joined us this year, as Mary Phelan flew in from Ireland specially to compete in the run, and then flew back to Dublin later in the morning. Mary had done 22 charity runs in 22 counties of Ireland so far this year, but this was her first overseas run.

This year the Runway Run raised funds for Where There’s a Will, a local Southampton charity which supports patients, as well as their family and friends, whilst they are on the General Intensive Care Unit (GICU) at Southampton General Hospital. They look at offering comfort and support to relatives who find themselves waiting to hear the news about their loved ones as well as support and home visits after patients have been discharged from the hospital. A team of senior nurses and theatre staff from GICU took part in the Runway Run as volunteers and runners.

The charity run itself has raised around £8k with further donations yet to come in.

Jan Halliday, Director of Marketing and Communications at Southampton Airport said “We were blessed with a glorious sunrise for the Runway Run, and everyone was in good spirits for this unique event which has raised a great amount for charity”.

Founder of Where There’s a Will, Heather Parsons said “We are totally indebted to Southampton Airport for giving us this very special opportunity to hold a fundraising event on the runway at sunrise. What very special people are awake so early in the morning. We were bowled over by the fantastic support we received from every runner, staff helper and our very own volunteers. Having been a critically ill patient myself, the parallels of the event weren't lost on me from being awake in the middle of the night, to watching every person taking their own time to finish and the seeing their elation once they had made it. A stunning day in every way.”
