The Science Park has unveiled plans to transform 1 Venture Road, which they recently acquired in a property deal, into a new multi-occupancy laboratory complex for early stage science companies. The ground floor will house small chemistry, biology and general purpose laboratories, together with shared scientific facilities for tenants, whilst the first floor will be re-shaped to provide office accommodation for small companies. These facilities will provide the perfect environment for start-up science and technology businesses to conduct commercially oriented R&D and bring new products and services to market. Work is already underway at the new Science Centre. Many of the laboratory facilities are already in place but a major overhaul will see them updated and improved to meet the Science Park’s exacting standards, and configured for occupation by multiple independent companies. In addition to the essential refurbishment work, we have plans for a spacious reception area and modern glass lift to bring the Science Centre in line with the contemporary environment enjoyed elsewhere on the Science Park.
The acquisition of 1 Venture Road reinforces the Science Park’s commitment to providing an environment which meets the needs of early-stage science businesses. As Peter Birkett, Chief Executive of Southampton Science Park, explains, “Science-based start-ups frequently need access to laboratory facilities which can require a big up-front investment. By providing an ‘easy in, easy out’ laboratory environment we are allowing companies to benefit from high quality facilities almost on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ basis, enabling them to avoid the high initial costs which are the bane of early stage businesses. This new project puts quality science right at the heart of the Park and accentuates our strategy of providing the right facilities to support commercialisation of technology.”
