Invest in Southampton

Southampton is recognised as a city that is really going places; a city of opportunity.

The city centre continues to undergo significant transformation.  The city’s Master Plan, launched in 2012, has given businesses and investors the confidence that Southampton’s ambition is matched by a clear vision and ability to deliver.  Just one look at the skyline shows how that confidence is manifesting itself, with towering construction cranes and a tangible sense that something is really happening.

But it’s not all about buildings and developments … Southampton, recognised as THE business centre along the south coast, has been cited as second best city in England for Good Growth and named Transport City of the Year.  A city full of ideas where ground-breaking research and an innovative approach to taking ideas from the lab to the workplace are helping Southampton to position itself as a leading city of innovation when it comes to life sciences and where cutting edge research underway is truly changing the world.

The only place you will find European football played on the south coast and with world-class cricket and The Solent, a mecca for water enthusiasts and host to over 400 sailing events each year, the city has an international sporting tradition both on land and water.

With five world-renowned, Grade II* listed central parks which boast unique special historic interest, Southampton’s position as the greenest city on the south coast is confirmed.  These outdoor spaces host a variety of dazzling events annually, including ‘Let’s Rock Southampton’, ‘Common People’ and ‘Sky Ride’, contributing to over 7 million day visitors each year.

“Well known for being the home of inventions such as the Spitfire, the Hovercraft and fibre optics, the city has a growing culture of innovation and creativity.” -
The arts complex, part of Southampton’s Cultural Quarter is the first of the seven VIP projects identified in the city’s Master Plan that will be completed contributing to Southampton establishing itself as a top-class cultural destination.  Over 50 new restaurants and bars due to open in the city over the next 18 months will certainly satisfy the appetite of the growing number of people choosing to visit, live and work in the city.

Southampton Airport offers around 40 European destinations with links for onward worldwide journeys. 1.8m passengers passed through Southampton Airport in 2014 – 6.2% higher than previous year – 43% domestic travellers, 37% international and 20% on flights to and from the Channel Islands.

With 400+ cruise ship visits each year, attracting 1.5m cruise visitors and most productive port in Europe, Southampton is surrounded by one of the most fascinating stretches of water in the world. Planned developments at Royal Pier Waterfront and Itchen Riverside will create exciting and vibrant waterfronts, rivalling established waterfront cities around the world, such as Amsterdam, Cape Town and San Francisco.

It’s an exciting time to be coming to Southampton
