Southampton’s thriving digital tech sector is noted in the 2018 Tech Nation Report; digital tech business turnover in the city has increased by 41% since 2014 and as of 2017 stands at £2.1bn. The sector has created an estimated 29,567 jobs in the city, which is the home to the world-leading Web Science Institute. Whilst Bournemouth and Brighton roll off the tongue as tech centres, Southampton is less well recognised despite its sector being more valuable than both of these cities combined.
We have partnered up with the aim of gaining a more complete, developed understanding of the specific opportunities around emerging technologies that exist in Southampton and the surrounding areas. These opportunities are currently overlooked and misunderstood and it is time for Southampton and the wider Solent region to put itself on the map as a national tech asset.
This half-day event will celebrate and promote the tech industry within our region. It will be held on the 14th June 2019 in the iconic Spark Building at Solent University and will signify our launch event for a programme of follow up events (Tech Talks) throughout 2019 and beyond. At the event you will have the opportunity to shape the agenda for these follow up Tech Talks, and will hear from our inspiring keynote speakers.
Our keynote speakers:
- Dame Wendy Hall (DBE FRS FREng, Regius Professor of Computer Science, Executive Director - Web Science Institute @ University of Southampton) who will set the strategic context of technology in the Solent region; covering developments at societal, economic, government and aggregate business level. This will touch upon areas from trading policy to growth initiatives.
- Simon Schofield, CTO of BAR (Ben Ainslie Racing)Technologies – who will address the commercial application of technology; the opportunities and the challenges.
This will be followed by the opportunity to network with your peers from across the region, as well as the speakers. You will also be able to visit the stands of various tech exhibitors in the 'Marketplace'.
The event will wrap up with your choice of one of three breakout sessions:
1.) Exploring the practical implementation of IoT technology
2.) Gigabit fibre and investing in high-speed infrastructure
3.) Accelerating local tech-start up ventures and accessing global funding/opportunities.
We look forward to seeing you there!
