"Southampton aims to be a centre of national excellence for the arts and culture and this first Southampton ShowsOff Weekend contributes to this ambition. We are at an exciting stage in the city’s development, with a new arts complex set to ignite the cultural heart of Southampton. Visit the showcase event taking place at the Art Gallery to find out more.

This week also sees the launch of the ‘Halation’ installation - a new public art project illuminating the city’s ancient walls at the High Arcades, near the De Vere Hotel roundabout and Hidden Histories, a revolutionary new heritage trail using street radio."

Art
“Southampton is gifted with a great art collection, the John Hansard, Millais and City Art Galleries exhibit stimulating programmes from established names and many other smaller art galleries display the work of local artists.

The art organisation a space supports the work of local emerging artists, enabling local talent to create and exhibit work in the city to help build the reputations of early careers.

Combining art with heritage has lead to the ArtVaults project that exhibits work within Southampton’s medieval vaults and the Bargate Monument Gallery provides an exhibition space within the historic Bargate. The Art in the Arches studio complex, reformed from an old cattle market, provides a studio base for 23 resident artists to develop their work and their careers.”

Daniel Crow
Music
“When I first came to Southampton in 2000 I was surprised and delighted by the range of music the city had to offer. At the Turner Sims, we have fostered a series of partnerships between budding young artists and top performers, like bringing piano star Julian Joseph to perform alongside Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra (SYJO) and virtuoso Piers Adams to play with the city’s young recorder players. We’ve even taken the Youth Orchestra to perform on stage at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms.

Consequently, I’m particularly pleased to see a group like the Portico Quartet - one of the UK’s hottest new bands in jazz - making the headlines, with two musicians among their number whose early years were spent in SYJO. Southampton’s many music venues such as the Joiners, Talking Heads, Platform Tavern and the Brook play an important part in inspiring local people to aim high and provide live entertainment.”

Kevin Appleby
theatre
“I am passionate about the thriving, award winning, theatre scene in Southampton. The city boasts two very different theatres – from the sheer entertainment of the Mayflower to the emotionally charged thrill of the Nuffield. The city also produces nationally renowned theatre for children and a wide range of participation projects including a number of very successful youth theatres.

There are also some fabulous playwrights who have trained at The Nuffield’s Writers Group such as Deborah Gearing who’s latest play, Burn was produced by the National Theatre last year. Who cares about theatre in Southampton? Well, lots of people actually. Thousands of children and teachers in schools do; thousands of people who experience Southampton’s very healthy amateur theatre scene certainly do; and the thousands of people who attend plays as diverse as A Streetcar Named Desire and the stunning Derevo at the Nuffield and big shows such as Cats and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at The Mayflower absolutely do.”

Russ Tunney
Dance
“There is more to dance than meets the eye and if you have never tried dancing before, you may be missing out.

Dance is much more than a new skill, a hobby or a way to lose weight - it is a powerful tool which can build your inner confidence, make you feel more energised, active, positive and help to strengthen your body and that’s just for starters.

For the past decade, dance has seen an explosion of popularity. With shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Dance Fever and films such as ‘Take the Lead’ children and adults have been inspired and more and more people are discovering the magic of dance.

Boasting a diverse culture the city offers something for everyone; from Ballet to Bollywood, Line to Latin, Tap to Tango and Art Asia’s Bharata Natyam dance to the Guildhall’s Tea Dances. The list is endless whether you have a partner or not, just take the chance and dance with one of Southampton’s many dance centres. So take that first step, explore the dance floor and it might just change your life.”

Tracie Gooch
Heritage
“As a teenager I would cycle into Southampton from the outskirts and in doing so pass a large sign which said “Welcome to Southampton Gateway to the British Empire”. It wasn’t until years later that I realised the historical significance of this statement.

My passion for Southampton’s history can never be summed up in a few words, just reciting the following proves the point, Saxons, Romans, French invasion, Medieval Trade, Agincourt, Mayflower, Railway Development, Titanic, World War I, The Great Liners, Supermarine Spitfire, World War II, Dunkirk, D-Day, Mulberry Harbours, Flying Boats, The GI Brides, Cruise Liner Industry; all of these and much more were influenced by Southampton.

The unique combination of Southampton’s proud history and heritage makes the city a fascinating place. We must make sure this history is accessible for future generations. Exciting work is now in progress to make sure the history of Southampton will be displayed over a number of sites within the city.”

Alan Jones
Film
“From the moment I picked up a camera at fourteen all I wanted to be was a filmmaker. Cut to several years later and I find myself the Creative Director of City Eye, working as a filmmaker amazed, inspired and privileged to be part of Southampton’s diverse filmmaking community. What I love about it is that filmmaking happens at a grass roots community level, in schools, youth centres, and universities.

We also have local filmmakers such as James Eaves (horror), Steve Bowles (documentary), Alys Hawkins (animation) and Laura Joy (experimental) who are all successful, award winning and recognised in their fields. It is this diversity of beginners and professionals, styles and talents that makes Southampton such a fantastically exciting, challenging and rewarding film culture.”
